Corrosive liquid attack on 8-year-old in Vaasa: Police investigate retaliatory and possible racist motives as family describes worsening injuries and daily harassment

Police are investigating a suspected aggravated assault after an 8-year-old child was doused with a corrosive liquid—identified as drain cleaner—in the yard of Variska School in Vaasa’s Ristinummi district on Sunday evening. The incident occurred in the presence of numerous young people, and the child sustained serious skin injuries requiring urgent hospital treatment before being discharged in a condition described as "presumably good given the circumstances" (Yle, Ilta-Sanomat, MTV Uutiset). Yle reports that the corrosive liquid caused severe skin damage to the victim. Iltalehti reports that police now suspect the attack may have been retaliatory, as the 8-year-old victim was previously linked to a separate aggravated assault against the 16-year-old Ukrainian boy accused of the corrosive liquid attack. The boy’s family has also raised concerns about a possible racist motive, as they experience racism regularly in their daily lives (Helsingin Sanomat). The parents told Helsingin Sanomat that while they consider a racist motive possible, there is no direct evidence to confirm it. However, they described enduring regular harassment, including Nazi salutes and being spat at by a group of young people living nearby (Helsingin Sanomat).
