Heavy Rainfall and Storm-Force Winds to Hit Western Finland – Over 50 Millimetres Expected as Severe Weather Warnings Issued, Flooding Risks Rise

Finland is set for a significant shift in weather this weekend, with heavy rainfall, localized thunderstorms, storm-force winds, and cooler temperatures replacing the recent warm and dry conditions. Meteorologists warn that much of the country could receive nearly a month’s worth of precipitation in just a few days, with some areas potentially exceeding 120 millimetres of rain—well above July’s average rainfall—by early next week. The heaviest downpours are now expected to concentrate in western and southwestern Finland, Satakunta, Pirkanmaa, the Ostrobothnia coast, and central parts of the country, where over 50 millimetres of rain may accumulate in just 24 hours (Iltalehti, Yle). Additional risks of thunder and lightning remain in southern and western regions, with urban flooding now also a concern. The Finnish Meteorological Institute has issued warnings for strong winds and high waves in the southern and northern parts of the Bothnian Sea on Sunday, while Ilta-Sanomat now reports that winds in western Finland may escalate into storm-force gusts, particularly over sea areas, with speeds reaching 15–18 meters per second (Ilta-Sanomat). Yle adds that coastal areas in Ostrobothnia and Satakunta may experience wind gusts of up to 20 meters per second on Sunday, increasing the risk of localized wind damage (Yle).
