Bear kills three dogs in Suomussalmi in June
A single bear is believed to have killed three dogs in Suomussalmi in June, marking an unusual series of attacks in the area. The bear, described as a young male, targeted dogs in kennels within the yards of two different households, according to Ale Seppänen, Executive Director of the Suomussalmi Game Management Association (MTV).
Seppänen told MTV that paw prints measuring 11 centimeters in width were found during inspections, supporting the theory that the same bear was responsible for all three incidents. He noted that such a concentration of attacks in a single area within a month is exceptional. No new cases have been reported in July (Iltalehti).
The Game Damage website lists four dog-related incidents in Suomussalmi this summer, though Seppänen suspects one may be a duplicate entry. Across Finland, bears have killed a total of 12 dogs so far this year, as reported by the Wildlife Damage Service (Ilta-Sanomat).
Bears that venture too close to human settlements may be euthanized if they pose a persistent threat. In May, a bear in Jyväskylä was put down after repeatedly entering residential yards, including the grounds of Keljonkangas Comprehensive School. Authorities first attempted to scare the animal away, but when those efforts failed, police ordered its removal (Ilta-Sanomat).
