Major Tool Theft and Custody Escape in Rauma
Two men are suspected of stealing tools worth approximately €60,000 and a company van from a sheet metal workshop in Rauma in late June. One of the suspects also escaped police custody during a home search before being recaptured the following day.
The theft occurred on the night of June 28, when the suspects broke into a workshop in Rauma. According to the Southwest Finland Police Department, the men stole tools and drove away in the company’s van (Iltalehti). Yle reports that the stolen property was valued at around €60,000.
Police traced the suspects following public tip-offs. A car linked to the men was located, and part of the stolen tools were later found in a private residence in Rauma. Two local men are now suspected of concealing the stolen property (Yle).
Escape and Recapture
One of the primary suspects, who had confessed to the theft, escaped custody on July 8 while police were conducting a search of his home. Satakunnan Kansa reports that witnesses described seeing a man with a backpack fleeing through private yards, with sightings likely connected to the escape (Iltalehti). The man was apprehended the next day and is now also suspected of escaping custody.
Despite the escape, police later released the man from pre-trial detention. The other suspect, however, remains in custody on aggravated theft charges (Yle).
The stolen van was recovered in a wooded area near Rauma, and additional stolen items were found during a subsequent search of a private residence (Iltalehti). The preliminary investigation is ongoing, with charges expected to be filed by September 7.
