Police investigate unauthorized medicinal substances at three beauty clinics in Helsinki region
The Western Uusimaa Police Department is investigating whether unauthorized medicinal substances and potentially unsafe medical devices were used in injection treatments at three beauty clinics in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The clinics are reportedly operated by the same actors, though their names have not been disclosed due to the ongoing investigation.
The suspected offenses include pharmaceutical crime, unauthorized practice of a healthcare profession, and potentially smuggling if the substances were illegally imported. According to Detective Chief Inspector Sari Knaapi, the lead investigator, the police are not aware of any injuries caused by the use of the substances, but the investigation aims to determine whether the actions meet the legal criteria for criminal offenses. "The purpose of the investigation is to determine whether potentially health-endangering substances and devices have been used in a manner that fulfills the elements of a crime," Knaapi stated (Yle).
The events under investigation are believed to have taken place over the past few years, though the exact timeline remains unclear. The police have not disclosed the number of suspects but confirm that "a few individuals" are under suspicion (Ilta-Sanomat). The investigation includes hearings, searches, and cooperation with sector-specific supervisory authorities.
The police are examining whether the substances used in the treatments had valid marketing authorization in Finland or were otherwise unauthorized products comparable to prescription pharmaceuticals. Additionally, the safety and compliance of the medical devices used by the clinics are being assessed (Iltalehti).
Ilta-Sanomat reports that the case may be linked to a previously reported incident involving Nordischape, a clinic in Espoo whose operations were halted by authorities earlier this year. Nordischape’s Helsinki clinic was also subsequently closed. However, the police have not confirmed a direct connection between these cases and the current investigation.
