Fatal explosion at Nammo Vihtavuori factory during renovation work
One person died and another was injured in an explosion at the Nammo Vihtavuori factory on Wednesday. The incident occurred during renovation work at the facility, though the exact circumstances remain under investigation.
The Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) has launched a probe into the accident, visiting the site on 16 July. According to Tukes, the investigation will examine technical and procedural factors that may have contributed to the explosion, including work instructions, employee training, and risk management practices (Iltalehti).
Tukes will assess whether the company complied with legal requirements and permit conditions, as well as the effectiveness of emergency response procedures. The agency will also review the factory’s broader operations to identify potential risks in other work tasks and evaluate whether similar accidents could occur elsewhere (Iltalehti).
The investigation will cover multiple aspects, including the company’s risk assessment processes, the identification of major hazards, and measures taken to mitigate them. Additionally, Tukes will scrutinize the orientation and training provided to both employees and contractors, as well as the implementation of rescue operations (Iltalehti).
MTV Uutiset reports that the investigation report is expected to be finalized by mid-November. Tukes will determine the precise activities underway at the time of the explosion and the factors that led to it.
