Police Release Wrongly Detained Man in Oulu Bicycle Stabbing Case as New Suspect Appears in Court
Police in Oulu have confirmed that a 34-year-old man detained in April in connection with a series of bicycle-related stabbings is no longer a suspect. The man was initially held on probable suspicion of a stabbing in Raksila on 14 April but was released by the Oulu District Court due to insufficient evidence. Helsingin Sanomat reports that the detention was linked to a broader investigation into five attacks on foreign individuals over the past year, four of which involved stabbings.
The police continue to investigate whether the incidents are connected or isolated acts. No arrests have been made in the case, though authorities have released images and videos of a suspect in the most recent attack, which occurred in late June. Yle reports that the perpetrator or perpetrators remain at large.
Meanwhile, a separate case involving a 28-year-old man from Oulu has come before the Oulu District Court. The man, who appeared via video link from a hospital, is suspected of two counts of attempted murder, aggravated breach of domestic peace, and violent resistance against an official. Ilta-Sanomat reports that the crimes took place in Vaala, North Ostrobothnia, earlier this week.
The suspect, dressed in hospital clothing, appeared disengaged during the hearing and did not cover his face when media were permitted to film. According to Ilta-Sanomat, he has no prior criminal convictions in the last decade. Police have not yet provided details on the case but have indicated they will release further information later. The charges carry a potential prison sentence of several years.
