Fatal Motorcycle-Car Collision on Kantatie in Kitee
A serious traffic accident on Kantatie in Kitee on Saturday morning resulted in the death of a motorcyclist and serious injuries to a passenger. The collision occurred shortly after 11:00 when a motorcycle traveling toward Kitee struck the front of a passenger car turning onto Lamminranta Road from the opposite direction.
According to police, the approximately 75-year-old male motorcyclist died at the scene, while a roughly 60-year-old female passenger sustained serious injuries. The driver of the passenger car was unharmed (Yle). The North Karelia Rescue Department confirmed that three individuals were involved in the incident (Ilta-Sanomat).
The accident took place on Highway 71 between Kerimäki and Kitee, near the Puhos section. The road was closed for approximately 2.3 kilometers in the direction of Puhossalontie, with traffic control implemented in both directions. Motorists were directed to a detour route (Ilta-Sanomat).
The speed limit on the section of road where the collision occurred is 60 kilometers per hour, and weather conditions were good at the time of the accident. Police have launched a preliminary investigation to determine the cause (Yle).
