Finnish Defence Forces impose temporary maritime restriction in eastern Gulf of Finland
The Finnish Defence Forces have implemented a temporary maritime area restriction in the eastern Gulf of Finland, effective from 05:45 on Saturday. The measure was announced on the social media platform X.
The Defence Forces stated that the restriction is a precautionary step to ensure the safety of third parties and to maintain operational conditions for authorities in the event of potential drone countermeasures. Yle reports that the decision reflects ongoing security concerns in the region.
MTV Uutiset notes that the restrictions are linked to the shifting focus of Ukrainian strikes, which have increasingly targeted areas closer to Finland’s neighbouring regions. According to the Defence Forces' media service, Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russian energy infrastructure in 2026, extending strikes deeper into Russian territory and focusing on northwestern regions critical to Russia’s military operations.
This is not the first time such restrictions have been imposed in the area. The Defence Forces previously implemented temporary aviation and maritime restriction zones in the eastern Gulf of Finland on 6 July, 4 July, and 2 July. (MTV Uutiset)
