A middle-aged man drowned early Saturday morning after falling from the Emäkoski Bridge in Nokia, Pirkanmaa. The incident occurred shortly after 5:30 AM, when the Pirkanmaa Rescue Department received an emergency alert from a member of the group the man was with.

The victim was part of a group of four people crossing the bridge, which spans the Nokianvirta River. Sami Suhonen, the on-duty lead investigator from the Eastern Finland Police Department, stated that the police do not currently suspect criminal activity in connection with the incident. The case is being investigated as an inquiry into the cause of death (Yle).

The rescue services located the man in the water following the alert. Iltalehti notes that the bridge is several meters above the river’s surface, though the exact height has not been specified. The accident took place on the Tehdassaari side of the bridge (Iltalehti).

The Nokianvirta River, part of the Kokemäenjoki water system, flows through Nokia, connecting Lake Pyhäjärvi in Tampere and Lake Kulovesi. The police have not disclosed how the man ended up in the water, with Suhonen stating that this will be clarified as part of the ongoing investigation (MTV Uutiset, Iltalehti).
