Water Boiling Advisory Issued for Petäjävesi Due to Microbiological Contamination
A water boiling advisory has been issued for residents of Petäjävesi following the detection of deteriorated microbiological quality in water samples from the municipal waterworks’ upper reservoir and distribution network. The advisory, which remains in effect until further notice, applies to water supplied by the Petäjävesi municipal water utility.
According to the municipality, water must be boiled for at least five minutes before use for drinking or food preparation to ensure safety. However, water can still be used normally for dishwashing, bathing, and flushing toilets. Residents are encouraged to continue using water as usual to maintain proper circulation in the system (Iltalehti).
The advisory does not extend to the Kintaus area, where water distribution is managed by the Kintaus Water Cooperative, as confirmed by the City of Jyväskylä (Yle).
Emergency Water Distribution
To support affected residents, emergency water distribution points have been established. Water will be available at Töysä Stable (Rantatie 6, Petäjävesi) starting at 8:00 PM on Saturday. A second distribution point is located at Kyläseppä (Karikontie 1). Residents must bring their own clean containers for collecting water (Yle).
Investigation and Next Steps
The cause of the contamination is currently under investigation. The City of Jyväskylä reports that samples will be collected from various parts of the Petäjävesi water distribution network during week 30. Additionally, the water utility is preparing to chlorinate the network as a precautionary measure (Iltalehti).
