Deadly Earthquake in Peru Leaves Six Dead and Dozens Injured
A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Andes mountain region of Peru on Saturday evening, resulting in at least six fatalities and approximately 30 injuries, according to local authorities. The quake’s epicenter was located near Chongos Bajo, roughly 300 kilometers east of the capital, Lima, at a depth of 24 kilometers (Yle).
Nearly 50 houses were destroyed in the disaster, leaving around 300 people homeless (MTV Uutiset, Yle). Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.
Peru is situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly active seismic zone that stretches along the edges of the Pacific Ocean, encompassing regions east of Asia and the west coast of the Americas. The area is known for frequent earthquakes due to tectonic plate movements (MTV Uutiset, Yle).
Seismologists note that Peru experiences around 400 earthquakes annually, though most are minor and go unnoticed by residents (Yle). This latest quake, however, has had a significant impact on the affected communities.
