Finland’s Pandemrix narcolepsy compensation dispute concludes after decade-long legal battle
The long-running legal dispute over compensation for narcolepsy cases linked to the Pandemrix swine flu vaccine has reached its final resolution in Finland. The Helsinki Court of Appeal issued its decisions in autumn 2024, bringing an end to years of litigation between affected individuals and the Pharmaceutical Injury Insurance Pool.
The case stems from the 2009–2010 swine flu vaccination campaign, during which Pandemrix was administered to millions in Finland. Subsequent studies found an increased risk of narcolepsy, particularly in children and adolescents, leading to numerous compensation claims. The Pharmaceutical Injury Insurance Pool initially rejected some of these claims, prompting legal action (MTV Uutiset).
In 2022, the Helsinki District Court ruled that the Pool must pay compensation to several individuals who developed narcolepsy after receiving the vaccine. Both the Pool and the claimants appealed the decision, with some affected individuals seeking higher legal costs against the Pool. However, the Court of Appeal dismissed these appeals last summer (Yle).
While some cases were resolved through court-mediated settlements, the Court of Appeal’s rulings in autumn 2024 marked the final judicial decision. Neither party sought leave to appeal to the Supreme Court, effectively concluding the legal process (MTV Uutiset).
