Heavy Rainfall Causes Multiple Road Collapses Across Finland
Heavy rainfall over the weekend has led to widespread road collapses in Central Finland and Pirkanmaa, with at least ten roads cut off due to water damage. The most severe disruptions have occurred in Multia, where three roads collapsed after the area received the highest rainfall in the country—114.2 millimeters within 24 hours (Yle).
Extent of Damage and Road Closures
In Central Finland, eight roads have collapsed, with Multia, Keuruu, and Saarijärvi being the hardest-hit municipalities. Two collapses occurred in Keuruu, while Saarijärvi saw three road failures, including two on the same section (Yle). In Pirkanmaa, roads collapsed between Ruovesi’s Hanho and Enoranta, as well as on Mäihäläntie in Ylöjärvi (Yle).
Mari Vartiala, operational shift manager at Fintraffic, described the situation as exceptional, stating that she does not recall a similar number of weather-related road closures in recent memory. "Heavy rainfall is a traffic disruption that has kept road traffic centers busy today," she said. Most affected roads are small, low-traffic routes, and detours are available, minimizing major disruptions (Iltalehti).
The Central Finland Rescue Department has responded to multiple incidents, though no major damage has been reported so far. However, the risk of further collapses remains as water continues to flow heavily alongside road sections (Iltalehti).
Repairs Underway, Some Roads May Reopen Soon
The Regional Development Center of Central Finland has begun repair work, with some roads potentially reopening to traffic as early as this evening. However, the timeline for full restoration depends on the extent of the damage and weather conditions (Yle). In Somero, Southwest Finland, a road collapse last week required extensive repairs after heavy rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems (Yle).
Tero Ahokas, a pavement engineer, previously noted that such collapses are rare in Finland, as roads typically meet all safety requirements. The Somero incident, however, demonstrated how extreme weather can exceed infrastructure capacity (Yle).
Public Urged to Report Road Damage
Authorities have requested that road users report any suspected damage immediately to the Regional Development Center of Central Finland at 0200 2100 (Yle).
The Finnish Meteorological Institute reported that 50–100 millimeters of rain fell in Pirkanmaa and northern Central Finland over the weekend, with the highest accumulation in Multia (MTV Uutiset). Fintraffic’s Vartiala warned that such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, placing additional strain on Finland’s road network (Iltalehti).
