World Cup Final Draws Thousands to Helsinki Fan Zone as Spain and Argentina Face Off
Thousands of football fans are expected to gather in central Helsinki on Sunday evening to watch the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. The match, taking place in New Jersey, will be broadcast on large screens at the fan zone in front of the Music Centre, where organisers estimate over 400,000 visitors have already attended during the tournament’s five-week run.
The official FIFA fan area, maintained by the Football Association, can accommodate around 5,000 spectators at a time. Yle reports that the grandstand has been particularly busy on evenings with multiple matches, with queues forming as fans wait to enter. Nicolas Prieto, responsible for communications at the fan zone, noted that the shared experience of watching matches together has been a major draw for visitors.
Fans Gear Up for an Exciting Final
Ahead of the final, the atmosphere in the fan zone was lively, with supporters from both teams expressing confidence in their sides. In the Spanish section, fans like Sandra Navarro and Emina Mykkänen were optimistic about their team’s chances, with Navarro highlighting young star Lamine Yamal as a key player. Mykkänen, a dancer, said Spain’s culture and Yamal’s influence had drawn her to support the team.
On the Argentinian side, fans were equally enthusiastic, with many sporting Lionel Messi’s image on flags and clothing. Ali Layth, a self-proclaimed Messi fan, predicted a 2–1 victory for Argentina but acknowledged Spain’s strength, particularly praising Yamal’s talent. For Layth, seeing Messi play was the highlight, though he admitted the match would be closely contested.
MTV Uutiset reported that by the start of the match, crowds had spilled over to the steps of the Parliament House, reflecting the high turnout. The final, set to begin at 20:30 on Yle’s channels, is expected to draw one of the largest audiences of the tournament in Helsinki.
