The Kainuu Border Guard has detained two individuals suspected of illegally crossing Finland’s eastern border from Russia. The incident occurred in the Suomussalmi area on Saturday, where no border barrier is currently in place.

According to the Border Guard, the detained individuals have applied for asylum in Finland. Stolen goods were confiscated from them during the operation, prompting authorities to urge summer cottage owners in Pyhäjärvi and Peranka to inspect their properties for any missing belongings. Ilta-Sanomat reports that the investigation into the suspected border violation is ongoing.

The Kainuu regional border commissioner has been in contact with the border commissioner of Russia’s Kalevala region regarding the incident, as confirmed by Helsingin Sanomat and Yle. The crossing point where the incident took place lacks an eastern border barrier, a detail noted in all three sources.

The case remains under investigation by the Kainuu Border Guard.
