UNESCO World Heritage Committee approves Aalto Works for World Heritage List

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has approved the inclusion of Aalto Works—a collection of architectural sites designed by Alvar Aalto, Aino Aalto, and Elissa Aalto—on the World Heritage List, according to the Ministry of Education and Culture (Yle).

The ensemble comprises 13 sites across Finland, showcasing modernist architecture. Key locations include Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Alvar Aalto’s former home, and the Aalto Campus of the University of Jyväskylä (Ilta-Sanomat).

The decision brings Finland’s total number of UNESCO World Heritage sites to eight, seven of which are cultural and one natural. Globally, the World Heritage List now includes 1,240 sites (Ilta-Sanomat).

Earlier confusion over premature announcement

An earlier press release from the Ministry of Education and Culture mistakenly suggested that the UNESCO recognition had already been granted. The statement was prepared in advance as a precaution but was published in error before the official decision (Ilta-Sanomat). The ministry later confirmed the correct outcome.
