Unusual salmon deaths and disease outbreaks in Tornio River raise concerns

Authorities in Finland and Sweden are investigating a surge in reports of diseased and dying salmon in the Tornio River, with experts warning of a potential fungal outbreak. The fish, which have ascended the river in unusually high numbers this summer, are exhibiting severe exhaustion, skin injuries, and abnormal behavior, including a lack of interest in bait.

Signs of fungal infection and weakened fish

Charlotte Axén, head of department at the Swedish National Veterinary Institute (SVA), confirmed that salmon in the Tornio River are in poor condition, with many appearing severely weakened. Yle reports that images of the fish suggest a fungal infection, likely Saprolegnia, which typically affects already compromised salmon. Axén explained that the fungus targets fish with pre-existing wounds, skin hemorrhages, or general weakness.

Marjukka Rask, a senior researcher at the Finnish Food Authority, noted that reports of salmon in poor condition have been more frequent this year than usual (Yle). While initial samples taken in June appeared normal, concerns escalated in July as more fish displayed signs of illness. Fresh research results are expected to be analyzed in the autumn, once laboratory work resumes after the summer break.

Anglers report declining catches and apathetic fish

The situation has alarmed local anglers, who have observed a sharp decline in active salmon. Kalervo Aska, chair of the Tornio-Muonio River Association, told Yle that the fish appear lethargic and show little interest in lures or bait, leading to a significant drop in catches compared to last year. Many anglers have reportedly stopped fishing due to the discouraging conditions.

The Natural Resources Institute Finland stated that more salmon have ascended the Tornio River this year than since 2021 (Iltalehti). However, the high numbers have also made diseases more visible, as infections spread more easily in dense populations.

Historical context and potential long-term impacts

The Tornio River has experienced salmon diseases and deaths in the past, though the exact causes have not always been identified. Aska drew parallels to a similar outbreak in Norway’s Gaula River last autumn, where a Saprolegnia fungal infection caused widespread mortality among spawning fish. According to the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, the number of spawning nests in the Gaula River plummeted from 230 to just 15 within a year, with potential long-term consequences for the salmon population (Yle).

Both the Finnish Food Authority and SVA are urging the public to report injuries and unusual behavior in Tornio River salmon to aid investigations. Axén noted that current reports are likely underreported, as only official submissions are being counted. Researchers hope to determine the root cause of the salmon’s lethargy and prevent further ecological damage.
