Finland’s Imports from Russia Rise Despite Sanctions
Finland’s imports from Russia increased in the first four months of 2024, despite ongoing EU sanctions targeting Moscow over its war in Ukraine. Data obtained from Finnish Customs by Uutissuomalainen shows that the value of imports reached €285 million between January and April, marking a €15 million rise compared to the same period last year (Yle; MTV Uutiset).
The majority of the import value came from nickel and related products, while ammonia was the most imported commodity by volume (Yle). However, the flow of ammonia—primarily used in fertilizers—is expected to decline due to new EU sanctions and Russia’s recent imposition of railway transport customs duties (Yle).
The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has stated that Finland supports expanding EU sanctions against Russia as long as its aggression in Ukraine continues (MTV Uutiset). Despite the increase in imports, Finland has adhered to existing restrictions, focusing on goods not covered by the sanctions regime.
