Finland’s population grows by 16 in first half of 2026 despite declining birth rate
Finland’s population reached approximately 5.65 million at the end of June 2026, growing by just 16 people in the first half of the year, according to preliminary data from Statistics Finland. The minimal increase was driven entirely by net migration, as the country experienced a significant natural population decline.
Between January and June, Finland recorded 23,662 births and 30,315 deaths, resulting in 6,653 more deaths than births (Daily Finland). The number of births was slightly higher than the same period last year, with 1,260 more children born, but the total fertility rate for the past 12 months remained low at 1.34, up from 1.30 in 2025 (Yle).
The population growth was sustained by immigration, with 19,720 people moving to Finland and 14,494 leaving, creating a net migration gain of 5,226 (Daily Finland). Without this influx, Finland’s population would have shrunk.
Regionally, Uusimaa saw the highest population growth, while only five of Finland’s 19 regions experienced an increase. The remaining 14 regions saw their populations decline (Yle). The preliminary data highlights ongoing demographic challenges, including an aging population and low birth rates.
