Lidl Introduces AI-Generated Imagery in Promotional Leaflets

Lidl Finland has begun incorporating AI-generated imagery in its promotional leaflets, marking the grocery chain’s adaptation to artificial intelligence in marketing. The images, which include products such as mini watermelons, butter croissants, and coffee packages, are now labeled with an "AI" tag to indicate their digital alteration or creation (Yle).

According to Jenni Sivunen, Lidl Finland’s Marketing Manager, the chain primarily uses AI as a tool for image editing—such as adjusting colors, refining backgrounds, or enhancing existing product photos—rather than generating entirely new images. "We always use authentic product images as our starting point," Sivunen stated in an email to Yle. She emphasized that AI offers greater agility compared to traditional editing software, aligning with the company’s view of AI as an opportunity rather than a replacement for conventional methods.

Lidl has implemented internal guidelines for staff on identifying and labeling AI-generated content, ensuring compliance with responsible AI use. The move comes as the company prepares for the European Union’s AI Act, which will require clear labeling of AI-edited or AI-generated images starting in August (Yle). The regulation mandates transparency in cases where AI has been used to create or substantially modify promotional materials.

Despite the shift, Lidl reports no customer complaints regarding discrepancies between advertised images and actual products. "It is important to us that the images we use in our marketing provide as realistic a representation of the products as possible," Sivunen said (Iltalehti). The company has not disclosed whether the adoption of AI aims to achieve cost savings.

As Finland’s third-largest grocery retailer, Lidl joins a growing number of businesses integrating AI into marketing workflows, though the extent of its use remains limited to editing rather than full image generation (Yle).
