Two Serious Traffic Incidents Under Police Investigation in Finland
Finnish authorities are investigating two separate traffic-related cases involving allegations of aggravated offences, with suspects detained in both incidents.
Kanta-Häme Court Extends Detention in Fatal Loppi Accident
The District Court of Kanta-Häme has extended the detention of a 52-year-old man suspected of aggravated causing of death and aggravated endangerment of traffic safety in connection with a fatal accident in Loppi on 10 July. The man, born in 1971, was first detained on 17 July at the request of police, and his custody was prolonged following additional evidence in the case.
A middle-aged woman, reportedly a passenger in the van involved in the crash, died in hospital on 15 July from injuries sustained in the accident. The suspect, who also required hospital treatment, has denied driving the vehicle, according to his defence attorney, Matti Alasentie (Yle). Police suspect the man was driving at excessive speed, under the influence of alcohol, and without a valid licence. Authorities have also cited prior convictions, including for aggravated drunk driving (Hämeen Sanomat, cited by Yle).
The Häme Police continue their investigation, with the prosecutor required to file charges by 10 September at the latest.
Ostrobothnia Police Investigate Attempted Homicide After Deliberate Collision
Ostrobothnia Police are probing an incident in Halsua, where a man is suspected of deliberately ramming another driver’s car before assaulting him. The emergency call, made during the night between Saturday and Sunday, reported the collision, after which the victim’s car veered off the road. The suspect then allegedly attacked the driver, who managed to escape (Yle).
A man was detained in connection with the incident and is suspected of attempted homicide, aggravated drunk driving, and aggravated endangerment of traffic safety. Police have indicated that charges may be refined as the investigation progresses (Iltalehti). The case was confirmed in a press release by the Ostrobothnia Police Department.
