Police Retrieve Fleeing Suspect from Lake Vesijärvi After Foot and Swim Chase
Häme Police had an exceptionally busy weekend, logging 626 tasks within a 48-hour period by Sunday morning, Yle reports. One of the most notable incidents involved a dramatic chase in Lahti, where a suspect fled on foot before attempting to escape by swimming in Lake Vesijärvi.
The incident began on Saturday evening shortly before 10:00 PM, when police received a report of a man and a woman testing car and house doors on Kivakatu in Lahti. The pair had already left the scene by the time officers arrived, but a patrol later encountered a man matching their description—approximately 30 years old—at a nearby convenience store (Yle, Ilta-Sanomat).
As police conducted a safety inspection, the man suddenly bolted, shoving an officer in an attempt to evade arrest. He fled on foot to Paapuurinkatu before entering Lake Vesijärvi, where he swam approximately 20 meters from the shore and refused to return. Police were forced to retrieve him from the water using a patrol boat (Yle, Ilta-Sanomat).
"That’s how it was this time—probably quite rare," a Lahti Police representative told Yle.
Among the belongings the man left behind at the store, police discovered narcotics and two bladed weapons. He was taken into custody at the Lahti main police station on suspicion of violently resisting an official, a narcotics offense, and possession of dangerous objects (Yle). Ilta-Sanomat adds that the charges also include possession of an object suitable for causing serious injury.
The woman who had been with the man was not located by police (Ilta-Sanomat).
