Ropecon 2024 breaks attendance records as role-playing culture surges in Finland
The 33rd edition of Ropecon, Europe’s largest volunteer-organized role-playing event, has drawn record-breaking crowds to the Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre this weekend. By Saturday, over 11,000 visitors had already attended, surpassing last year’s total of 10,000 participants (Yle). The event’s head organizer, Frans Cederlöf, confirmed that attendance has grown by 10–20% annually, reflecting a broader rise in role-playing and fantasy gaming culture in Finland.
Cederlöf attributed the growth to increased media visibility and the popularity of live-streamed gaming content. He noted that the trend is global, with miniature games—particularly those set in the Warhammer universe—seeing significant expansion (MTV Uutiset). "You can see that role-playing, fantasy worlds, LARPing, boffering… everything that falls under Ropecon is clearly growing in Finland," he said.
Diverse gaming experiences and societal themes
Ropecon offers a wide range of activities, from high fantasy and futuristic role-playing to live-action role-playing (LARP) and boffering—soft-sword combat simulations. The boffering area alone attracted over a thousand participants by Saturday, including both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts (MTV Uutiset).
Role-playing games serve multiple purposes for participants, from escapism to processing real-world challenges. "Many enjoy building a fantasy world’s story based on what they themselves want to tell," Cederlöf explained. He also highlighted the medium’s potential for addressing difficult societal issues, comparing it to other forms of art (MTV Uutiset).
This year’s event theme, "dreams," was reflected in the event’s visual materials, including a photo gallery (Yle).
Awards recognize contributions to the gaming community
In addition to gaming activities, Ropecon celebrated key figures in the industry. The Golden Dragon award was presented to publisher Matti Järvinen, while the Game of the Year award went to the Finnish Museum of Games’ exhibition "Yhteispeli vaakalaudalla – yhteistyölautapelejä Pandemicista Agemoniaan" ("Cooperative Play at Stake – Collaborative Board Games from Pandemic to Agemonia") (Yle).
