Colorado potato beetles, a destructive potato pest, have been found in six locations in Eastern and Southeastern Finland this summer, according to the Finnish Food Authority. The beetles have been observed in Lahti, Kouvola, Savonlinna, Luumäki, Ruokolahti, and Joensuu (Yle, MTV Uutiset).

The Finnish Food Authority estimates that the beetles have successfully overwintered in two or three of these locations, with confirmed overwintering cases in the Lahti area and Southeastern Finland. In other fields, the beetles are believed to have spread via air currents from the Baltics and Russia during the summer (Yle).

Potential Impact on Potato Cultivation

If the Colorado potato beetle becomes permanently established in Finland, it could significantly increase pest control efforts and costs for potato farmers (MTV Uutiset). The Finnish Food Authority considers it highly likely that more beetles will be detected and urges farmers and home gardeners to monitor potato fields until harvest.

Identification and Reporting

Adult Colorado potato beetles are approximately one centimeter in size and have yellow-black striped backs. The larvae, which cause feeding damage, are orange, black-spotted, and plump (Yle).

The Finnish Food Authority emphasizes that all observations and suspicions of the beetle must be reported to the authorities. Independent control measures should not be taken, as this may hinder efforts to eradicate the species.
