A significant thunderstorm front has reached Finland, bringing strong gusts, heavy rainfall, and thousands of lightning strikes early this week. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has issued multiple warnings for severe thunderstorms, with the highest alert levels currently focused on eastern and northern regions, particularly Kainuu and Koillismaa. Helsingin Sanomat (HS) reports that warnings for dangerously intense thunderstorms have been issued for these areas on Tuesday, with risks of wind damage and prolonged power outages due to storm gusts and heavy rainfall. Ilta-Sanomat (IS) adds that an orange warning—indicating a significant risk of widespread damage—has been issued for northeastern Finland and eastern Lapland on Tuesday, while other thunderstorm-affected areas are under a yellow warning for localized damage. The orange warning specifically highlights the potential for extensive cleanup efforts, prolonged power outages, and disruptions to telecommunications (IS). Yle now reports that a severe thunderstorm warning has also been issued for southeastern Lapland early on Tuesday, with Yle meteorologist Elias Paakkanen stating that thunderstorms will activate in the afternoon and spread by the evening, with the greatest risk of strong thunder gusts in the northern part of the country, particularly Kainuu and Lapland. Yle further confirms that strong thunderstorms started booming across central and northern Finland on Tuesday afternoon, with conditions expected to intensify and spread toward the evening (Yle). MTV Uutiset reports that as of 15:04 on Tuesday, FMI has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for 28 land areas and five sea areas, with the most critical alerts targeting Kainuu, North Savo, North Karelia, and parts of Lapland, where gusts may exceed 25 m/s, leading to widespread wind damage, prolonged power outages, and telecommunications disruptions (MTV Uutiset).
