Stormwater Sewer Repair Accident Causes Street Closure in Helsinki
A section of Sturenkatu in Helsinki has been closed to traffic following an incident during stormwater sewer repairs. The closure affects both sides of the street west of Mäkelänkatu, disrupting movement in both directions.
The Helsinki Rescue Department received an emergency call at 13:44 regarding the incident, which occurred during maintenance work on a stormwater sewer in a nearby property. According to the Rescue Department, water entered the basement of the building as a result of the accident (Iltalehti). Several rescue units were dispatched to the scene (Iltalehti).
Rescue personnel are currently pumping water out of the affected basement. The operation remains ongoing, with authorities focusing on damage control (Yle). The cause of the water intrusion is linked to the sewer repair work.
