Two Young Adults Killed in Head-On Collision in Valkeakoski
A horrific head-on collision in Valkeakoski on Sunday, April 12, resulted in the deaths of two young adults and left a horse fatally injured. The accident occurred on Hämeenlinna Road near the Jutikkala overpass, approximately 17 kilometers from the center of Valkeakoski.
The Accident
The emergency center received multiple reports of the collision around 6:30 PM. According to eyewitnesses, a 23-year-old man was driving a modified blue Volga at extremely high speed toward Iittala, overtaking other vehicles in an area where passing is prohibited by solid lines (Ilta-Sanomat). At the same time, a 21-year-old woman was driving a red Toyota toward Valkeakoski, accompanied by her 40-year-old mother in the front passenger seat. The Toyota was towing a horse trailer carrying a five-year-old competition horse (Iltalehti).
The mother later told police she became aware of the situation when her daughter made a sudden evasive maneuver to avoid the oncoming Volga. Despite the attempt, the vehicles collided head-on (Iltalehti). Both the 21-year-old woman and the 23-year-old man died instantly at the scene. The mother survived with injuries (Ilta-Sanomat).
Aftermath and Investigation
The force of the collision was so severe that the Volga’s engine, which had been replaced with a more powerful V8, was completely ejected from the vehicle. The engine sparked a small wildfire, which rescue services quickly extinguished (Iltalehti). The Toyota and its attached horse trailer were partially on the road and partially on the shoulder. The horse escaped the wreckage but was caught by bystanders. Due to severe injuries to its front and hind legs, as well as psychological distress, the animal was euthanized (Ilta-Sanomat).
A forensic autopsy revealed that the 23-year-old man had a blood alcohol level of 1.6 per mille at the time of the accident (Iltalehti). Police identified the man through DNA analysis and investigated the case as gross endangerment of traffic safety, gross drunk driving, and gross negligent homicide. However, since the suspect also died in the accident, the case did not proceed to prosecution or court (Ilta-Sanomat). The police concluded their investigation at the beginning of July.
Community Response
In the days following the accident, numerous candles were left at the scene in memory of the victims. One candle bore the message, "Safe journey to heaven" (Ilta-Sanomat). The father of the 23-year-old man told police the day after the accident that his son had gone for a drive but did not know his whereabouts (Iltalehti).
