Finland is set to experience a short-lived heatwave this week, with temperatures rising close to or above the heat threshold of 25°C in several regions. The upcoming thunderstorm activity is described as "the most interesting episode of the summer in terms of thunderstorms" by Foreca meteorologist Markus Mäntykannas, with the potential for thousands of lightning strikes and severe weather conditions (Ilta-Sanomat). The Finnish Meteorological Institute now forecasts that Friday could become "the most lightning-rich day so far this thunderstorm season," with duty meteorologist Jaakko Savela stating there is a strong likelihood it will break the summer’s record of just under 2,500 ground strikes (Ilta-Sanomat). Yle reports that the Finnish Meteorological Institute has issued a flood warning for parts of Central Finland, North Ostrobothnia, and Kainuu due to the risk of locally heavy rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters in a short period, which could lead to urban flooding and rising water levels in small rivers and streams (Yle).
