Helsinki’s school district changes spark backlash, safety concerns, and relocations in East Helsinki as city defends equity and language integration goals

The City of Helsinki’s decision to redraw school district boundaries in East Helsinki has triggered opposition from guardians, local politicians, and even prompted some families to move out of the area. The changes, approved by the Finnish-speaking division of the Education and Training Committee on 2 June and expanded in June, will shift some children from Myllypuro and Hertsika primary school to Itäkeskus comprehensive school, altering long-standing school assignments in the region. The reforms also affect schools in Vartiokylä, Herttoniemi, and Mellunkylä (Ilta-Sanomat). The new boundaries will gradually come into effect in 2027, with children from Puu-Myllypuro transferring to Itäkeskus as early as next year, while some changes will only be implemented in 2030 (Yle). Ilta-Sanomat reports that students from Vartiokylä’s upper and lower schools will also be reassigned to areas like Puotila and Kontula under the new boundaries.
