Two Men Remanded in Custody Over Separate Domestic Violence Incidents in Lahti
The Päijät-Häme District Court has remanded two men into custody following separate incidents of suspected intimate partner violence in Lahti. Both cases were heard on Wednesday, with the suspects facing serious charges, including attempted homicide and aggravated firearms offences.
Attempted Homicide in Keski-Lahti
A 50-year-old man is suspected of attempted homicide after an incident on Monday, 27 July, in the Keski-Lahti district. Police were alerted to a private residence, where they found a victim with injuries that led investigators to classify the case as attempted homicide. Yle reports that the victim is a close associate of the suspect, and the incident is being treated as intimate partner violence.
The man was apprehended in the yard of his residence and later remanded into custody on probable cause for the suspected crime (Yle; Iltalehti). Iltalehti adds that the investigation is based on the victim’s injuries and "other circumstances" uncovered during the preliminary inquiry.
Firearms Offence and Assault in Ruola
In a separate incident on Sunday, 26 July, police cordoned off a residence in the Ruola district after receiving reports of a domestic assault. A 26-year-old man was apprehended inside the apartment, where authorities found a firearm for which he had no permit. Helsingin Sanomat reports that the man is suspected of threatening his spouse with the weapon, as well as aggravated deprivation of liberty and assault.
The spouse managed to escape the apartment before police intervened, issuing commands to the suspect before taking him into custody. The man was remanded into custody on Wednesday on probable cause for aggravated deprivation of liberty, aggravated firearms offence, and assault (Yle; Iltalehti; Helsingin Sanomat). Helsingin Sanomat notes that the deadline for filing charges in this case is 27 November 2026.
