Finnish authorities have successfully removed approximately 60,000 litres of oil from the wreck of the coastal defence ship Ilmarinen, significantly reducing the environmental risk posed by the vessel to the Baltic Sea. The operation, conducted between 14 and 24 July 2026, was led by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and the Finnish Navy, with support from the Finnish Border Guard and the Diving Medical Center.
