Man arrested after aggravated robbery at Espoo café

A man is in police custody following an aggravated robbery at a café in Laajalahti, Espoo, on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 PM, when the suspect allegedly threatened staff and customers with a bladed weapon before taking money from the cash register.

The Western Uusimaa Police Department confirmed that bystanders intervened, preventing the suspect from fleeing the scene and detaining him until police arrived. Yle reports that the situation no longer poses a danger to the public. Chief Inspector Hannu Kontola (Iltalehti) stated that the man was restrained by witnesses before authorities took him into custody.

No injuries were reported, though the incident caused distress among those present. Both Yle and Iltalehti note that crisis support is being offered to affected individuals.

The police are continuing their preliminary investigation into the incident, which is being treated as an aggravated robbery.
