Border Guard investigates suspected illegal border crossing from Russia in Ilomantsi
The North Karelia Border Guard Detachment is investigating a suspected illegal border crossing from Russia into Finland. The incident occurred late on Saturday evening in the Mutalahti area of Ilomantsi, where a foreign national was apprehended after allegedly crossing the national border through terrain.
The individual was located based on the Border Guard’s own surveillance observations, and the detention proceeded without incident. Yle reports that the person subsequently applied for asylum in Finland. The Border Guard has initiated a preliminary investigation into the suspected violation of the state border (Yle, Ilta-Sanomat).
The North Karelia regional border commissioner has been in contact with the Russian border commissioner of the Suojärvi area regarding the incident, as confirmed by multiple sources (Yle, Iltalehti).
In addition to the preliminary investigation, Ilta-Sanomat and Iltalehti note that the individual has been subjected to the EU’s migration and asylum screening procedure, in accordance with the bloc’s regulations. No further details about the person’s identity or nationality have been disclosed.
