EU’s AI transparency rules enter into force requiring clear labelling of AI-generated content
New transparency obligations for artificial intelligence (AI) within the European Union have taken effect today, mandating that all AI-generated content must be clearly marked. The rules aim to ensure users are aware when they are interacting with AI systems, such as chatbots, or viewing AI-created images.
Under the new regulations, companies must implement measures to distinguish AI-generated content, including the use of watermarks or other visible indicators. Failure to comply with the requirements may result in substantial fines, Yle and MTV Uutiset report.
The rules apply to a wide range of AI applications, including text-based systems like chatbots, which must now explicitly inform users that they are engaging with artificial intelligence. Similarly, AI-generated images must be visibly labelled to prevent misinformation or confusion.
While the regulations are now in force, their impact on everyday AI use in Finland remains to be seen. MTV Uutiset notes that AI has already become a part of daily life for many Finns, though concerns persist about potential risks, such as misinformation or misuse. The new EU-wide requirements seek to address these challenges by promoting greater transparency in AI interactions.
