Finland’s Nuclear Waste Disposal Facility Clears Key Safety Approval Amid Local Support, Foreign Waste Concerns, and New Technical Insights

The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) has issued a favourable statement to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, confirming that Posiva’s encapsulation plant and final disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel in Eurajoki meets all legal safety requirements. The assessment, submitted on 4 August 2026, removes a critical hurdle for the Government to grant an operating licence for the facility, which would be valid until the end of 2070, as requested by Posiva. Yle reports that STUK’s approval was granted on Tuesday, following three postponements of the original deadline, which was initially set for the end of 2023 (Yle). STUK’s Director General Petteri Tiippana described the milestone as "a significant step in the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel, which has been prepared for over 40 years" (Iltalehti). Daily Finland adds that STUK’s statement confirms there are "no obstacles to granting the facility an operating licence with regard to radiation and nuclear safety," marking the first time a geological disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel has reached this phase globally (Daily Finland).
