Two Minors Injured in Illegal Moped Meet in Seinäjoki

Two underage moped riders were injured on Saturday evening during an illegal moped meet in Seinäjoki’s Roves industrial area. According to the South Ostrobothnia and Pohjanmaa Police, one of the minors sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries (Iltalehti, Yle).

Hundreds of young people had gathered on Forklift Lane (known locally as Trukkiväylä) for the event (Ilta-Sanomat, Yle). The accident occurred when an underage light motorcycle rider lost control while performing a wheelie—riding with the front wheel in the air. The rider fell from the vehicle, which then continued into oncoming traffic and collided with another moped. The moped driver suffered serious injuries, while the light motorcycle rider sustained minor injuries (Ilta-Sanomat, Yle).

Police Investigation and Consequences

The light motorcycle rider was issued a driving ban, and police are investigating the incident as gross endangerment of traffic safety and gross assault (Ilta-Sanomat, Yle). Authorities emphasize that organizers of moped meets are responsible for ensuring safety and must notify police in advance, as many such events meet the criteria of a public gathering. Unreported meets that endanger traffic safety are prohibited (Ilta-Sanomat).

Calls for Vigilance

Police report that similar illegal moped meets were reported elsewhere in the Pohjanmaa region over the weekend. They urge young people to avoid participating in such events and remind guardians to monitor their children’s activities. Authorities also stress that public roads are not suitable for stunts, wheelies, or racing (Yle, Ilta-Sanomat).
