Minor Rescued After Rising River Current Traps Angler in Ylivieska
A young angler was safely rescued from a dangerous situation in Ylivieska on Thursday afternoon after rising water levels and strong currents trapped him on a riverside rock. The incident occurred near the rapids at Raputie, where the Hamari dam’s discharge had intensified the river’s flow following heavy rainfall.
The North Ostrobothnia Rescue Department received an emergency alert at 12:43 after the minor, who had been fishing alone, noticed the water level rising rapidly. According to Joose Veteläinen, the on-duty fire chief at the Ostrobothnia Rescue Department, the boy first contacted his parent, who then called emergency services. Veteläinen confirmed that the minor remained composed throughout the ordeal, following instructions to stay on the rock until help arrived (MTV Uutiset).
Rescue crews acted swiftly, coordinating with the dam operator to close the Hamari dam gates, which reduced the current. A surface rescuer was then able to retrieve the angler to safety. The boy did not fall into the water and sustained no injuries (Iltalehti).
The dam gates were later reopened, though authorities warned that the river’s flow remains strong due to ongoing heavy rainfall and dam discharge. The rescue department emphasized the importance of caution near fast-moving water, particularly in areas affected by dam operations.
