Thousands of Litres of Milk Spill in Reisjärvi After Truck Trailer Failure
An estimated 3,000–4,000 litres of milk spilled onto a road in Reisjärvi on Thursday morning after a technical failure in a milk truck’s trailer. The incident occurred shortly before 9:00 AM on Ylilestintie, prompting an immediate response from the North Ostrobothnia rescue department.
Yle reports that the spill posed an environmental risk, with rescue services dispatched to the scene to assess and contain the situation. Fire chief Toni Jurmu of the North Finland Situation and Command Center confirmed to Ilta-Sanomat that most of the milk flowed onto an asphalted yard rather than directly into the environment. A vacuum truck was deployed to remove the milk from the surface.
According to Jurmu, the trailer experienced a technical malfunction, causing the leak, but it remained upright and did not tip over. The driver was able to continue milk deliveries using the front part of the vehicle along the regular route. Rescue services also used an external excavator to dam the area, preventing the milk from reaching a nearby lake.
