Care home director in Lapland suspected of stealing patients' medication and diluting painkillers
A woman working as the director of a care home in Lapland is suspected of stealing narcotic medications prescribed to residents for her own use, according to the Lapland Police. The case, described as extensive and exceptional, involves allegations of aggravated narcotics offenses, nine counts of theft, and eight counts of assault.
The suspected offenses occurred between April 2024 and August 2025, with the police alerted after a report from the care home (Yle). Among the stolen medications was OxyNorm oral solution, a morphine-derived opioid classified as an extremely dangerous narcotic, used to treat severe pain when other painkillers are insufficient (Helsingin Sanomat).
The police preliminary investigation reveals that the woman allegedly misappropriated both leftover and currently used medication from residents. To conceal the thefts, she is suspected of adding water to medication bottles, diluting the painkillers. As a result, some residents may have received weakened doses, leading to additional suspicions of assault and endangerment of patient safety (Yle).
The police have emphasized the severity of the case, noting that the suspect held a position of special responsibility for the care and safety of vulnerable residents (Iltalehti). The preliminary investigation has been completed, and the case will now proceed to prosecutorial consideration at the Northern Finland Prosecution District.
