Elderly Man Dies in Police Custody During Transport to Jyväskylä
An elderly man died on Thursday while being transported by police to a detention facility in Jyväskylä. The incident occurred after officers detained the man in Jämsä, where he was found intoxicated and unable to care for himself.
According to the Central Finland Police Department, a patrol initially began transporting the man to the intoxicated persons' holding cell at the Jyväskylä police detention center. During the journey, the transporting patrol was relieved by a Jyväskylä police patrol. At the time of the handover, the man was still communicating with officers (MTV Uutiset; Ilta-Sanomat). However, upon arrival at the Jyväskylä police station, he was found lifeless. Despite resuscitation attempts, the man could not be revived (Helsingin Sanomat; Iltalehti).
The Office of the Prosecutor General will investigate the lawfulness of the police actions in the case. The Central Finland Police Department has stated that it will not provide further details on the matter (MTV Uutiset; Ilta-Sanomat).
