British Columbia Declares State of Emergency as Wildfires Force Mass Evacuations
The Canadian province of British Columbia has declared a state of emergency as wildfires continue to spread rapidly, forcing thousands to evacuate their homes. The measure, announced on Saturday, grants authorities special powers to manage the crisis, including travel restrictions and emergency resource coordination.
Over 20,000 people in various parts of the province are under evacuation orders, while approximately 9,700 others have been warned to prepare for potential displacement at short notice (Ilta-Sanomat). British Columbia Premier David Eby described the situation as "extremely threatening," noting that homes have been destroyed and some residents had to be rescued after becoming trapped by rapidly changing conditions. "The situation is still evolving rapidly," Eby said at a press conference (Yle).
One of the most severe fires, the Bald Range wildfire in the province’s southern interior, has grown to cover roughly 95 square kilometers since it was detected on Friday evening. The blaze has triggered the largest evacuation operation of the summer so far, affecting communities such as Summerland and Peachland—key areas in British Columbia’s wine industry, which is Canada’s second-largest (Ilta-Sanomat). Eby recounted that a rescue official had compared the fire’s intensity to "a bomb exploding," with flames reaching up to 60 meters above 30-meter-tall trees and generating its own weather system, including lightning (Yle).
As of Saturday, 105 wildfires were burning in British Columbia, with 70 igniting in the past week alone (Ilta-Sanomat). Hot and dry conditions have exacerbated the crisis, increasing the risk of further spread. Around 1,500 firefighters are battling the flames, supported by international crews from countries including Mexico, Australia, France, and New Zealand (Yle). This year, wildfires have already scorched four million hectares of land across Canada, according to the Canadian Wildfire Centre.
The state of emergency allows the province to implement measures such as preventing price gouging on essential goods and deploying additional resources for rescue operations (Ilta-Sanomat). British Columbia, Canada’s westernmost province with a population of nearly 5.7 million, has faced repeated wildfire challenges this year, alongside other provinces like Ontario and Quebec (Yle).
