An excavator being transported on a lorry toppled onto a passenger car on Vuosselintie in Kuusamo on Sunday afternoon, causing hazardous material leaks and road closures. The incident occurred at around 4 PM, according to Ilta-Sanomat.

The North Ostrobothnia Rescue Department reports that the lorry was traveling downhill when the excavator shifted and partially fell onto the passenger car. MTV Uutiset states that the lorry was descending a winding, serpentine section of the road, which leads to the Ruka tourism center. Fire Chief Pasi Mänty of the rescue department noted that the truck was likely not traveling at high speed due to the road’s layout (Ilta-Sanomat).

Emergency medical services examined the two occupants of the passenger car at the scene. The lorry driver was transported to Oulu for further medical evaluation (MTV Uutiset). The size of the excavator has not been confirmed, though Mänty suggested it was likely a larger model, given that it required truck transport (Ilta-Sanomat).

The accident resulted in the leakage of motor oil, hydraulic oil, and AdBlue fluid onto the road and into the surrounding area. Containment efforts and the lifting of the excavator are still ongoing. Four rescue units were initially deployed, with two remaining at the site (MTV Uutiset). The road at the accident site has been closed, and a detour has been arranged via Peräkorventie.

Police are investigating the cause of the excavator’s fall. No further details on the condition of those involved or the extent of the environmental impact have been released.
