Former Finnish MP and Academic Erkki Pystynen Dies at 93
Former Member of Parliament Erkki Pystynen has passed away at the age of 93. The news was first reported by Iltalehti and later confirmed by multiple sources.
Pystynen died peacefully in his sleep at a care home on 13 July 2026, according to Mika Kotiranta, the son of Pystynen’s late wife, Marja-Liisa Pystynen (MTV Uutiset). Kotiranta described Pystynen as a cooperative policy expert who earned respect across party lines.
Pystynen was elected to Parliament in 1975 from the Northern Häme constituency, serving a total of 16 years as an MP (Helsingin Sanomat). Beyond his political career, he held prominent academic roles, including professor of municipal politics at the University of Tampere, as well as vice-rector and rector of the institution.
