African Swine Fever Confirmed in Finland’s Wild Boar Population
Finland has confirmed its first cases of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boars, marking the disease’s arrival in the country. The Finnish Food Authority detected the virus in dead wild boar piglets found in Virolahti, Southeast Finland, at the end of July. The EU’s African swine fever reference laboratory in Spain later confirmed the findings (Yle; Helsingin Sanomat).
Over the past weekend, 17 additional samples were collected from dead wild boars in the same region, near the Vaalimaa border station. Matti Nyberg, Head of the Animal Health Unit at the Finnish Food Authority, stated that the discoveries suggest two separate herds—one near the original site and another a few kilometers north. However, the number of samples does not necessarily reflect the number of infected animals, as multiple samples may come from the same carcass. Results from these latest samples are expected early this week (Yle).
Genetic Analysis and Possible Origins
The Finnish Food Authority’s animal disease virology laboratory has sequenced the entire genome of the virus, identifying it as genotype II, genetic group 3. This strain was first detected in Ukraine in 2012 and has since spread across Europe, including the Baltic countries, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Belgium, Italy, and Russia. Despite the genetic analysis, the exact route of the virus’s entry into Finland remains unclear (MTV Uutiset; Helsingin Sanomat; Ilta-Sanomat).
Restrictions and Preventive Measures
In response to the outbreak, the Finnish Food Authority has established an infection zone covering Virolahti, Miehikkälä, and southern Lappeenranta. Within this area, forestry work is prohibited. A stricter core zone, within a three-kilometer radius of the initial discovery site, bans berry picking, mushroom foraging, and walking dogs in the forest to minimize the risk of human-mediated spread (Ilta-Sanomat).
The Southeast Finland Border Guard has also closed game gates in the eastern border fence to prevent wild boars from crossing and further spreading the disease (Ilta-Sanomat).

African swine fever is a highly contagious haemorrhagic disease fatal to pigs but does not affect humans.
