Eight Suspected in Commissioned Arson of Lauttasaari Bicycle Shop
Police have identified eight individuals suspected in connection with the deliberate arson of a bicycle shop in Lauttasaari, Helsinki, earlier this year. The fire, which caused extensive damage to both the shop and the residential building above it, is believed to have been carried out as a commissioned act.
The blaze broke out on 3 March 2026 at a bicycle shop located on the ground floor of an apartment building on Pajalahdentie. According to the Helsinki Police, the fire resulted in significant fire and smoke damage to the residential units in the property. The case is being investigated as aggravated criminal mischief (Iltalehti; Yle).
Two Teenagers Accused of Setting the Fire
Chief Inspector Olli-Pekka Punkari, the lead investigator, stated that the fire was set by two 17-year-old boys at the time of the act. One of the teenagers is an Iraqi citizen, while the other is a Finnish citizen, though both reside in Finland. The preliminary investigation indicates that the youths acted on behalf of a third party (Iltalehti).
Ten individuals were initially suspected in the case, but charges are now being considered for eight of them. Two suspects remain at large, with arrest warrants issued for their apprehension (Yle).
Crime Commissioned from Abroad
Police suspect that the arson was ordered by three individuals based abroad. One of them, an Iraqi citizen, was arrested in the United Kingdom and extradited to Finland in June 2026. He remains in custody. The other two suspects are believed to have played a role in preparing the crime by facilitating its execution (Iltalehti).
During the investigation, a firearm was seized from one suspect, who is now also facing charges for an aggravated firearms offense (Yle).
"Crime as a Service" Phenomenon Highlighted
Detective Chief Inspector Kimmo Sainio of the Helsinki Police Department described the case as an example of the Crime as a Service model, in which criminal actors recruit others to carry out illegal acts on their behalf. The strategy is used to evade direct criminal liability while exploiting vulnerable individuals as perpetrators (Iltalehti).
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the attack. Speculation regarding potential reasons for targeting the bicycle shop has neither been confirmed nor dismissed during the preliminary investigation (Yle).
The case has now concluded its preliminary phase and will proceed to consideration of charges. The prosecutor will determine whether the matter will be brought before a court.
