Heinola Manslaughter Trial Begins Over Fatal Independence Day Car Incident
The trial of a 30-year-old man accused of driving his car onto a sidewalk in Heinola on Independence Day, killing a pedestrian, began on Monday morning. The defendant faces charges of manslaughter, three counts of attempted manslaughter, aggravated drunk driving, and hit-and-run in traffic.
According to the prosecutor, the incident occurred at approximately 00:20 on Virtakatu, just before the intersection with Kauppakatu. The accused allegedly swerved his Volvo station wagon from the road onto the sidewalk, striking a roughly 20-year-old man who later died from his injuries. Three other young men in the victim’s group managed to avoid the car and were unharmed (Ilta-Sanomat, Iltalehti).
The events leading to the collision began earlier at a nearby grill kiosk, where both the accused and the victim’s group had been present. Iltalehti reports that the encounter was described by the lead investigator as negative but not violent. After leaving the kiosk, the victim’s group began walking along Virtakatu toward Kauppakatu, where the driver allegedly followed and struck them.
Following the collision, the driver fled the scene and abandoned his car outside Heinola’s city center. Police located and detained the suspect shortly afterward (Ilta-Sanomat).
In the courtroom, the accused attempted to conceal his face with his jacket when media were permitted to photograph him (Iltalehti). The trial proceedings are scheduled to continue on Monday and Wednesday.
