Three youths suspected of toppling over 100 gravestones in Joutseno cemetery
Police suspect three individuals under the age of 15 of toppling gravestones and committing other acts of vandalism at the Joutseno cemetery in Lappeenranta. The incidents occurred over two nights between 21 and 23 July, with a total of 108 gravestones pushed over. Memorial items and flowers were also destroyed during the vandalism spree.
Crime Sergeant Sanna Lautamatti of the Southeastern Finland Police confirmed the suspects’ identities and stated that the investigation is ongoing. The police will question the suspects in the coming days. At this stage, the offences are being investigated as a violation of sepulchral peace and criminal damage (Yle).
The Lappeenranta Parish Union filed a police report following the incident, describing the act as large-scale vandalism. The parish has also informed relatives if their gravestones were affected. According to reports, most of the gravestones remained largely undamaged (Yle, Iltalehti).
Previous incidents and legal consequences
This is not the first time the Joutseno cemetery has been targeted. The parish reported that vandalism has occurred at the site in both 2023 and 2024 (Iltalehti).
In Finland, individuals under the age of 15 are not held criminally responsible for their actions. However, they may still be ordered to pay compensation for damages caused (Iltalehti). The police investigation will determine the next steps in the case.
