Police Renew Search for Missing Juha Valkola in Siikajoki After Six Years
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has resumed searches for Juha Valkola, who disappeared in Siikajoki nearly six years ago, focusing on the Paavola area. The case is being treated as a suspected homicide and aggravated extortion, with investigators believing Valkola was killed within 24 hours of his last known sighting on 24 August 2020.
Detective Chief Inspector Jukka Nurmenniemi of the NBI’s Oulu unit confirmed that searches have been conducted intermittently throughout the investigation but are now concentrated in Paavola based on preliminary inquiries and intelligence. Yle reports that the exact search location remains undisclosed, though Nurmenniemi clarified it is not near the Paavola village store where Valkola was last seen. The searches are being carried out discreetly, with no specific tip or new information cited as the reason for the renewed focus.
Valkola’s last known appearance was captured on surveillance cameras at the Paavola village store, where he left a note reading "Help." Ilta-Sanomat notes that previous searches for his body have taken place across Northern Ostrobothnia, including in Raahe at an old mining site.
Two individuals remain suspects in the case, which the NBI is investigating as manslaughter and aggravated extortion. The pair were initially detained and remanded in custody but later released due to insufficient evidence. Nurmenniemi declined to comment on whether new suspects have emerged over the years but confirmed that the investigation remains active. No recent interviews have been conducted in connection with the case.
The NBI has not disclosed further details about the ongoing searches or the evidence guiding their efforts.
