Warm spell arrives in Finland with peak temperatures on Saturday
Finland is set to experience a brief but notable warm spell this week, with the highest temperatures expected on Saturday. However, meteorologists warn that the heat will be short-lived, giving way to cooler and unsettled weather by Sunday.
The warm air is being pushed into the country by a low-pressure system approaching from the south, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). Helsingin Sanomat reports that Saturday will likely be the warmest day of the week, with temperatures potentially reaching 25°C in southwestern Finland, including areas like Turku. The capital region may also see warm conditions, though rain showers could prevent the highest temperatures from materializing.
"It’s just one day, not any longer. And if rain showers occur during the day, the warmest scenario won’t materialize," said Heikki Sinisalo, an on-duty meteorologist at the FMI (Helsingin Sanomat).
While southern and southwestern Finland may enjoy summer-like warmth, the weather will remain cooler and more unstable in the north. Yle notes that temperatures in Lapland will stay around 15°C, with southern Lapland possibly reaching 20°C at most. Rain is also expected in the northern regions.
Weekend brings rain and cooling
The warm spell will be short-lived, as rain and thunderstorms are forecast to move in on Sunday. Helsingin Sanomat reports that the rain will bring cooler air, with southern Finland seeing temperatures drop to around 20°C or below. Thunderstorms are also a possibility, particularly in the south.
"No similar temperatures are seen in the forecast after Friday and Saturday," Sinisalo added (Helsingin Sanomat).
Midweek weather: Wind and rain
Earlier in the week, the weather will be mixed. On Tuesday, strong northwest winds are expected, particularly in central Finland and Northern Ostrobothnia, prompting wind warnings from the FMI. Rain and local thunderstorms are also forecast for southern and central parts of the country.
By Wednesday, rain areas will move across Finland, though it remains uncertain whether they will reach the capital region. Temperatures will stay below 20°C nationwide, and eastern Finland will also be under a wind warning (Helsingin Sanomat).
Thursday is expected to be mostly dry, though light rain may persist in Lapland. Southern Finland will see temperatures around 20°C, with drier air reducing humidity (Helsingin Sanomat).
Scattered showers possible
Both Yle and Helsingin Sanomat highlight the likelihood of scattered showers across the country from Friday to Sunday, though sunny spells are still expected, particularly on Saturday. The north will remain cooler, with temperatures hovering around 15°C even during the clearest periods (Yle).
